Staying Calm: Why It’s Important to Maintain Your Happiness

With so much going on these days in the world, it may be difficult to stay calm. Even harder to focus on something other than the negativity that is currently plaguing everything around us.

Ping.” Apple News just sent an alert to your phone.

Ping.” CNN just posted an article.

Ping, Ping, Ping, Ping.” It almost seems as though headlines and breaking news are following us.

It’s hard to stay calm and refocus your energy when there is just so much happening right now. As I’m writing this, there is a literal war going on, Twitter is being bought out, many have to fight for basic human rights, and the list can, and will go on. It’s important to actively evaluate how you can minimize the stress and anxiety some current events may cause to your mental well-being. Below are examples that have helped me shift my focus from all of the gloom the world is currently offering to do what makes me happy.

  1. Make plans. I’ve found that when I make plans, I have something to look forward to for a couple of days. Even the smallest plans help. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate vacation with your bestie; it can simply be getting a meal with a loved one.

  2. Identify the stressor. What’s making you stressed? Is it the news app on your phone? Hide the app. Scrolling through social media? Limit your screen time. I’ve found that taking apps off of my home screen has really limited my use of them. No, don’t delete them- well, that’s up to you. But, simply a long hold on the app, click edit home screen, the minus button, and then “remove from home screen.”

  3. Accept the negativity. I know. That seems very counterproductive. But, if you harbor all this negativity inside of you, you’ll most likely take it out on someone who doesn’t deserve it. If you just accept that there is going to be negativity, you’ll be more apt to make an adjustment to avoid the negativity.

Are you taking care of yourself?

Self-care is crucial. Not just when you are going through a difficult time. Reevaluate what you can do for yourself to shift your focus away from the news. Even if it’s for 30 minutes or an hour. I guarantee, that once you do something for yourself, you’ll get into a habit of doing that same activity more than once. Some self-care options include:

  • Going for a walk in the park

  • Reading that book you’ve been meaning to get started

  • Getting a meal with a friend

  • Going for a scenic drive

The list goes on. Find what works best for you and enjoy it. I’ve been known for taking some time on the weekends and driving down to the shore. Preferably Ocean City, NJ, of course. I’ll get a coffee, bring a book, and sip the coffee while reading and relaxing on my blanket in the sand. This works for me, it doesn’t have to for you. Regardless, what I’m trying to get at is there are options and healthy ways for you to remain optimistic.
