What It's Like Being an Introvert in an Extroverted World
Do you love being by yourself but hate feeling lonely? I get it. Society has built such a fast-paced world and with that speed, comes stress and anxiety. That’s why I’ve backed away recently and kind of stuck to myself. I know it’s not good, but this time has allowed for some much-needed self-discovery. I guess that’s a plus. I’ve found a lot of new interests that I would’ve never thought I’d like. My point is, that sticking to yourself and being a little introverted never hurt anyone.
However, when society expects you to be at a 10 when, mentally, you’re at a 7, it can be draining. That’s why it’s important to recharge from time to time. Recharging can be whatever you make it. From taking time away from what is stressing you out to taking yourself on dates.
I’ve gotten to a point where every time I was invited to drinks or dinner with my friends, I’d have a little panic attack. Simply because I've become accustomed to being so introverted.
I’m here to tell you to pause. Literally, stop and take a second to breathe. Honestly, how bad can going to get a meal with your friend be? It won’t hurt.
Below are some ideas to get you thinking about taking the first step to enter society, after recharging.
Take yourself on a date. Whether that date is to your favorite coffee shop, a museum, etc., get out and do it. Spending time by yourself before going out with someone else is essential to remaining happy.
Take that PTO, vacation, or sick day. That’s what it’s there for. If you wake up, and you feel like you just can’t even think about working that day. Call out. The company will still stay afloat if you take the day off. Guaranteed.
Find a new hobby to keep you busy. As I mentioned above, when you are taking this much-needed alone time to gather your thoughts, you’ll never know what new hobby you might pick up. I’m really adamant about trying something new. Who knows, maybe you’ll start to knit a scarf. Nothing against any knitters out there.
This world is constantly go, go, go. It’s important to take a step back and dictate how you want to move forward. Because at the end of the day, you’re the one in charge of your own happiness.
